Lily Inspiration: Strandbeests

For the last twenty years, Dutch artist Theo Jansen has been creating strange, wind-propelled creatures he calls Strandbeests, or Beach Animals, out of pvc piping,an extremely common building material in the Netherlands. Technically part of a somewhat esoteric plan by the artist to help maintain Holland's beaches in the face of global climate change and rising ocean levels--I'm a little fuzzy on the details...something about them flinging sand?--I suspect their real function is to be wondrous and uncanny. They do it well!
